BMC Elections: India's largest municipality

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India’s largest and richest municipal body, governs Greater Mumbai’s civic infrastructure, finances, and services, with a budget bigger than many Indian states.

Elections to the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) are to be held shortly. With a huge budget of 74,427 crores, it is among the richest entities, spending more than many smaller states. For comparison, Maharashtra's budget is 7.5 lakh crores. However, receipts come on Capital account and 14,000 + crores as compensation in lieu of Octroi.

  • BMC plans to generate revenue through new initiatives such as taxing commercial properties in slum areas and monetizing civic land.

  • Significant funds are dedicated to healthcare and education, like expanding the 'Aarogya Seva Aaply Dari' scheme and creating STEM robotics labs in schools.

Election to BMC constituencies.

  • Mumbai is divided into 7 zones and 24 administrative wards with its own BMC office and ward officer.

  • These are further split into 236 electoral wards/constituencies (corporator seats).

Elections will be held on 15th January 2026 with results expected the next day
